As a true skincare nerd, I have found that just one cream is not enough for my skin because the seasons offer different humidity levels that change the skin's conditions. In winter, it is quite cold in our latitudes. Cold air is dry air. Dry air wants to drain moisture sources in order to balance itself. People are walking sources of moisture and we have probably all experienced that the skin feels much drier in the winter. That cream you had last summer is no longer enough for imbalance! Skin that is out of balance is not something that goes unnoticed. It is dry and flaky. It itches and can sometimes lead to eczema. We don't have to end up there.
Adapt your skin care to the season. When the air is colder and drier, you can easily add more oil and vice versa. In winter, balm is therefore so grateful to use over your day cream. A balm that is free of water and forms a protective and comforting blanket over the skin. Balms usually consist of various oils and a little beeswax that can prevent moisture loss. A really good balm can be used not only on the face but also wherever the skin needs a little extra protection. I am discovering more and more that more people choose to use balm over their cream overnight. It can certainly be discouraging to put on something that feels so oily on the skin. If you use a sparing amount on the face, the balm is experienced more as a comfort.
I have to admit that I like the consistency and can easily apply a little more than necessary, especially if I'm going out in the cold. If I'm going to an event where I'm expected to look tip top and my makeup is on, I take some balm with me and mix it with foundation to get a natural glow. That trick never fails, I get so many compliments on the "glow" that my skin gets.
If you've discovered balm, then you know exactly what I'm writing about. If not, then it's time to seek one out.
