The author is Johanna Ståhl, a journalist who describes herself as a "philosophical visionary who believes in the possibilities of humanity." In the book, she gives 365 tips on small and big things each of us can do to live more sustainably. At home, at work, on vacation, and at parties. She also writes more in-depth texts about the state of our planet.
I oscillate between hope and despair, between embracing and wanting to give up when it comes to the planet and, above all, humanity. With the help of this book, I get a boost to believe in the possibilities. Not least, I am reminded that what we do makes a difference. Every little thing. EVERYONE must contribute – companies, industries, politicians and private individuals. As a private individual, it is not difficult to inspire you, I share with you some of the tips Johanna Ståhl suggests:
At home
Make it easy to do the right thing - have recycling bins easily accessible in the kitchen. Post easy-to-prepare vegetarian recipes on the fridge door for when inspiration strikes.
Change into a new wardrobe – organize a clothes swap day. Invite friends, neighbors and other friends. It will give you new fun clothes and extend the life of the clothes you are tired of.
Full load - always wash with a full load. Use the slightly longer economy programs and skip the prewash.
Lower the temperature indoors – lowering the indoor temperature by one degree can reduce energy use by 5%. Put on slippers and sweaters.
The food
Organic is logical - Choose organic whenever you can. If the supply is poor, ask the store and ask them to bring in more.
Choose good meat and dairy products – choose organic dairy products and meat from naturally grazing animals.
Pick your food in the wild – some of the most common species that can be eaten are wild cherry, dandelion, stinging nettle, spruce shoots, watercress, mallow, chamomile and sorrel. (Read more in my book Wild Growth!)
Make your own lip balm – make your own skincare products! Make your own to avoid yet another product with unsafe content.
1 tsp beeswax – ask your local beekeeper
1 tsp cocoa butter
1 tsp almond, coconut or rapeseed oil
Break the beeswax into small pieces, chop the cocoa butter finely, mix with the oil and pour into, for example, a deciliter measure. Heat over a water bath. Stir until everything melts. Pour into a small jar and let cool. Lubricate!
At work
Coffee break - replace disposable cups at the workplace with porcelain cups.
Become a lunchbox expert – you also know what's in the food you cook. Lunchboxes are a great way to take care of leftovers and reduce food waste. Bring a lunchbox more often so you can spend more money on good ingredients.
Living sustainably is an act of love! Love to you all
